I have read and collected all of James' books. I love the Dave Robicheaux novels and the fact that he uses such big words.

I had only read one of Burke's books before and was quite taken with his command of the language! This book took me in and kept me in to the end as he can weave poetry and prose into the simplest sentence, thereby capturing your attention and holding it. I loved trying to visualize the atmosphere, the area and the distinct "speak" of the locals. Can't wait for the next one!

Best one yet

This new book by James Lee Burke has energized my interest in the Dave Robicheaux series. There had become a sameness to the last few books, but this last one gripped me from the beginning. The prose is amazing, the story gripping, just fabulous. Also, the apple (Alafair) doesn't fall far from the tree (Dave).

I had grown a bit bored with Clete and wondered why Dave kept him around. Now I know. He is without a doubt reliable and James Lee Burke has a command of the language that is phenomenal. His only rival is Koontz. After considering abandoning Dave and Clete I'm glad I gave them one last chance. Great read! It did leave me wondering though. I'm hoping for a follow-up.

I'm a fan of James Lee Burke and love his lyrical style, and the way he draws you into the story. No wonder this book has hit the NY Times Best Seller's list. Don't miss this one if you follow the adventures of Detective Dave Robicheaux and his goofy friend, Clete.
