The Story of Edgar Sawtelle

We never heard of David Wroblewski before The Story of Edgar Sawtelle ended up on our desks, but he’s a name we’ll definitely be paying attention to from now on. Already garnering the admiration of bestselling authors and critics around the nation, his gorgeously written debut is a tour de force of storytelling about a shocking murder, a boy’s coming of age and the ineffable bond between a dog and its human.

Edgar Sawtelle is a young mute who helps his family raise the Sawtelle dogs (a breed distinguished by its uncanny intelligence) in rural Wisconsin. It’s an arduous life, but a satisfying one until the arrival of his paternal uncle, Claude, a mystifying mix of charm and menace. When Edgar’s father unexpectedly dies, the grief-stricken boy tries to prove that Claude played a role in the death, but his plan backfires—spectacularly. Now, forced to flee his home, Edgar comes of age in the wild with only three loyal dogs as his companions. But even as he and his dogs learn to survive on their own, his need to find his father’s killer turns him ever homeward, propelling the narrative with explosive energy that will have you breathlessly turning the pages until the final, extraordinary scenes.

Really hated the ending
August 09, 2010

I liked the character development, loved the dogs and all the training, liked the "magic realism" bits, absolutely DESPISED the ending. How could the author do that to us?? That poor woman will never get any closure since there is no possibility that she'll ever know what happened to her family. I was just bereft for a couple of days after finishing it.

Disappointing
July 18, 2010

This book was a choice for our bookclub. I had not read any of the reviews before I read this book. I loved the writing style and the allusions to nature. I identified with Edgar and his journey for knowledge. I even emphasized with Trudy and her need to maintain her husband's presense in the only way she could. However the violence turned me off pretty early in this story. I was left feeling empty and bereft at the end of the book. If a 14 year old mute boy cannot be redemed than is there hope for any of us?

Wonderful

This is a beautifully written book. I was amazed by the writing skills of this author. Not many books I read live up to this standard.

beautiful prose
May 14, 2010

This first novel for Mr Wroblewski shows us his ability to create such beautiful prose that I had to re-read sections before moving on to the next chapter. The description of the bond between this teen and the Sawtelle dogs is riveting. The end of the story is both tragic and unsatisfying, but I suspect we will see a "sequel" someday. If so, I will certainly read more !

huge disappointment!

I completely agree with Heather! VERY over rated, a huge disappointment! To say it had a bad ending would be an understatement. Do not recommend. Don't waste your money on this one.
