Anne Perry once again brings authentic Victorian charm, nail-biting suspense and redemptive power to the holiday season with A Christmas Odyssey. This time, distinguished mathematician Henry Rathbone is called to help an old friend who fears his missing son, Lucien, has fallen victim to a dark world of vice and venality. With the help of Squeaky Robinson and Crow, two friends familiar with London’s seedy underworld, he combs the pubs, brothels and opium dens of the West End, where rich men procure an extreme and dangerous form of entertainment. Slowly, this odd trio discovers clues about Lucien’s obsession with a mysterious woman named Sadie…and about a ruthless adversary who, like the Devil, never lets go of those in his grasp.

I have to say that having read all of Anne Perry's "Christmas" stories, they are not what you would expect from a "typical" Christmas story. That does not mean you should skip them, on the contrary, you should read them all. I love the way she uses these stories to round out her characters and bring her wonderful background characters to the front. Henry Rathbone has always been a favorite of mine so it was nice to see him as the star in this story.
