The Ghosts of Cannae

For millennia, Carthage’s triumph over Rome at Cannae on August 2, 216 B.C. has inspired reverence and awe. It was the first battle of encirclement that countless armies tried to imitate, most notably in World Wars I and II, and a clash that obsessed some of history’s most legendary military minds. Yet no general ever matched Hannibal’s most unexpected, innovative and brutal military victory—the costliest day of combat for any army in history. In The Ghosts of Cannae, Robert L. O’Connell, one of the most admired names in military history, now tells the whole story of Cannae for the first time, giving us a stirring and beautifully-written account of this apocalyptic battle of the Second Punic War, and its causes and consequences.

O’Connell shows how a restive Rome amassed a giant army to punish Carthage’s masterful commander, who had dealt them deadly blows at Trebia and Lake Trasimene, and how Hannibal outwitted enemies that outnumbered him. O’Connell describes Hannibal’s strategy of blinding his opponents with sun and dust, enveloping them in a deadly embrace and sealing their escape, before launching what amounted to a massive knife fight that would kill 48,000 men in close contact. During the course of the battle, Rome lost a large portion of its leadership, between a quarter and a third of the Senate—men who wanted to be present at what promised to be a great triumph. The Ghosts of Cannae then conveys how this disastrous pivot point in Rome’s history ultimately led to the republic’s resurgence and the creation of its empire. It was but one dramatic example of how Rome managed to pull resounding victory out of the jaws of defeat.

Piecing together decayed shreds of ancient reportage, the author paints powerful portraits of the leading players: Hannibal, resolutely sane and uncannily strategic; Varro, Rome’s co-consul who was so scapegoated for the loss; and Scipio Africanus, the surviving (and self-promoting) Roman military tribune who would one day pay back Hannibal at Zama in North Africa. O’Connell also reveals how Cannae’s legend has inspired and haunted military leaders ever since, and the lessons it teaches for our own wars.

Ultimately, The Ghosts of Cannae is at once a book about a specific battle, but also an interpretation of the larger course of the Second Punic War, and an assessment of the impact of Rome’s storied rivalry with Carthage. Finally, it chronicles the fate of the battle’s survivors, their stigmatization by the authorities in Rome, and ultimately their vindication nearly two decades later by defeating Hannibal at the decisive battle of Zama in North Africa.

Superbly researched and written with wit and erudition, The Ghosts of Cannae is the definitive account of a battle whose history continues to resonate.

Regardless of whether the reader is interested in warfare of this era, I think the reader will find this book interesting and informative. I was captivated by the story, and found the book was difficult to put down. The book has a lot to offer readers with different interests. The descriptions of the battles (land and sea), the tactics, the strategies, the personalities, the politics, and the historical setting are all interesting. If you have ever wanted to know the real story of Hannibal and his elephants, this book provides the full story.
