In Ireland, they’re called Ulster-Scots, among other names. In America, they were called Irish until they changed their name to Scotch-Irish after the arrival of their old foes, the Catholic Irish, in the mid-1800s. They finally settled on Scots-Irish (to avoid confusion with the whiskey). Whatever name they’ve used, they’ve always been the other Irish. Their ranks have included Mark Twain, Neil Armstrong, Stephen King and John McCain. They’ve given us more than 20 presidents, the NRA, Revolutionary War victories, a third of today’s U.S. military, country music, Star Wars, the Munchkins, the religious right—and even NASCAR, whose roots go back to Prohibition-era moonshine runners.
In The Other Irish, Karen McCarthy offers a colorful profile of this little-lauded group, whose genome is part Irish, part Pictish, and mixed with strains of as many as nine other ancient European tribes. Taking us from their original immigration to the American South in the early 1700s to the present day, she shines a probing light on a patriotic, rebellious, fervently religious people that have played a crucial role in shaping the fabric of our nation—but whose rich history is little known to most Americans.

What a bad book, I can't believe the Book Club sells this drivel. Spell-check, grammar check, and fact checking were not used in writing this book, nor was there any semblance of a reason for writing the book. No effort was made to prove the stated premise, Scots-Irish Renegades and the Making of America. There was no flow to the book, and writing about Davy Crockett’s great, great grandson added nothing to the book. Waste no time or money on this sub-standard offering. Count me as a very disappointed Scots-Irish reader.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this look at the origins of many different aspects of our American culture. Of particular interest to me is that I now know the background for a song my mother always sang, "Billy Boy." I'm not always agreeing with the author but I am enjoying the debate!
