Of all the Golden Age mystery writers, John Dickson Carr was considered the master of the impossible-crime story—a.k.a. the locked-room murder. Named the best locked-room mystery of all time by a panel of Carr’s peers, The Three Coffins contains Dr. Gideon Fell’s famous discourse on impossible crimes, which set the standard for the genre.
In To Wake the Dead, mystery writer Christopher bets a friend that he can swindle a hotel. Instead he finds himself in a hotel room with the murdered wife of his cousin—who was killed in the exact same manner.
In The Skeleton in the Clock, Sir Henry Merrivale gets involved with a psychic researcher and soon learns it’s never a good idea to go ghost hunting in the execution shed of an old prison.

I don't know that I've ever read Mr. Carr before but I will do my best not to read him in the future. I agree with Judith B, I didn't find the language so bad - in fact I thought the archaic terms and exclamations as well as the very sexist attitude displayed was amusing - but the book was tedious. I have never heard so much meaningless and superfluous musings since the last Kay Scarpetta novel I read, which I have vowed to be my last Kay Scarpetta novel.

I bought the book based on reviews and so was very surprised and disappointed when I began to read. The droll British language was very boring and everything too slow and tedious. I have not finished it yet and probably will not.

I haven't read a J. D. Carr book in awhile. I was looking forward to this one and I wasn't disappointed. A nice trio of stories.

If you love trying to solve puzzles, then this is the book for you. Two of the stories I was able to solve. I had a hard time putting this book down. I highly recommend it.

You will love these three stories -- it amazed me how simple the solutions were! I really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down!
