James Patterson’s first foray into nonfiction introduces us to Cory Friedman and his remarkable family in a story that is every bit as gripping as the author’s bestselling suspense novels. In his moving preface, Patterson notes that he was “drawn to Cory’s harrowing story because of what it says about the power of love, courage, and determination,” and “because it would give hope and comfort to so many others struggling in all walks of life.” As you will see, Against Medical Advice does all that—and more.
Cory Friedman was just 5 years old the morning he woke up with the uncontrollable urge to twitch his neck. From that day forward, frightening impulses to say and do unimaginable things dominated his life and sent him, with his desperate parents, on an excruciating journey to discover the cause and, hopefully, a treatment. Instead, the drugs prescribed had side effects that were almost as bad as the disease. And meanwhile, nothing stopped Cory’s incessant torment.
Patterson’s presentation of Cory’s 12-year-long battle is dramatic, heartrending and ultimately triumphant in honoring, as was his hope, “the sheer invincibility of the human spirit.”

A fascinating insightful look at a rarely understood condition. Although Patterson is known for his fiction this novel kept me both engaged and intrigued throughout. A definite emotional twister. JP has done it again.

I throughly enjoyed this book and it is different to have the story told from the boys perspective! I really enjoyed this book!

Engaging story about a child growing up with tourettes syndrom. I especially became more aware of the effects drugs can have. When my daughter recently began a new medication and proceeded to have negative behavioral side-effects, I was much more in tune to the cause and she was slowly taken off the drug. What a window into the hardships of a family coping with a child with disabilities!
